Figures demonstrate continued momentum for tourism in 2014

The Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) today welcomed the 11.1% increase in overseas visitors to Ireland in the period May to July (link to CSO figures). Stephen McNally, President of the IHF, said that the figures indicate a continued momentum behind overseas visitors building on last year’s strong performance.

“It’s particularly encouraging that strong growth is continuing a pace from North America and Great Britain, which are vital overseas markets for us,” says Mr McNally. “With many parts of the country outside the main tourism hotspots still lagging behind, the challenge now is to ensure these gains are spread throughout the country. This is where initiatives such as the Wild Atlantic Way can make an enormous contribution to regional tourism.”

Welcoming the Government’s continued support for the sector, Mr McNally states: “Much of the increase in visitor numbers is down to Government initiatives in support of the tourism sector, such as the 9% tourism VAT rate and the zero travel tax continues to help when marketing Ireland abroad as a tourism destination, enabling us to attract a greater share of overseas visitors.”
